Some Weight Loss Recipes

If you want to lose weight you can't continue eating what you've been eating before. It is obvious that you must change your diet, portion size and eating frequency. However this doesn't mean you have to eat dull, uninteresting food or be hungry all day long. There are delicious healthy recipes that you can enjoy and at the same time lose weight.

Below are some recipes to help you lose weight while enjoying your meals.

Hummus

1 can of chickpeas (19oz or 540ml), rinsed and drained
1/3 cup of tahini (sesame paste) - use 1/5 cup for the weight loss purposes
Juice of freshly squeezed half lemon
1 garlic clove, minced
1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon chopped parsley
a pinch of paprika mild

Process chickpeas with cup of spring water to puree in a blender. Add tahini, lemon juice and garlic. Mix well. Garnish the top with parsley, olive oil and paprika.

Orange drink

1 cup of orange juice
cup vanilla rice milk
2 tablespoons of soft tofu
1/3 of banana (to sweeten) or add 1 teaspoon of honey
1 teaspoon of grated orange zest
2 peeled orange segments

Mix everything together in a blender.

Roasted Eggplant

Roast the whole eggplants with skins turning them occasionally till the skin turns black. Let it cool. Peel it off and remove the darkened skin. Process in food processor till smooth.

You can add to it 1 clove of crushed garlic or 1 chopped onion, 1 tablespoon chopped parsley and 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil.

Another way to serve roasted eggplants:

After roasting the eggplant, dice it into small cubes, dice 1 medium tomato and 1 medium onion, add 1 tablespoon of chopped parsley and 1 teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil. Mix well together and serve.

In order to lose weight, a person must create a calorie deficit - i.e. they must use up more calories during the course of their day than they consume though eating food. It is possible to lose weight without doing any exercise, but the problem with this is that it is very difficult to stick to, as you will probably feel hungry quite a lot of the time. The easiest way to lose weight is to incorporate some regular exercise into your life, which will increase the number of calories burned, and making it easier to create that calorie deficit. One of the best exercises to lose weight is swimming. This exercises the entire body, and will also help to develop some muscle tone. However, this is a dull form of exercise, as you are stationary and it can become quite boring after a while. You are also likely to be in close proximity to other exercisers, and there is nothing worse than needing to take in big gulps of air when the lady on the machine next to you has seemingly taken a bath in extra strong perfume.

In my opinion the best exercise to lose weight is running. There are probably experts who would disagree with that opinion, but for me, running has been the most effective form of exercise for weight loss. Running puts a bit of a strain on the knee joints, so it is important to get fitted for a decent pair of shoes. Find a route which isn't too busy with cars - you can measure the distance using Google's pedometer tool - as you want to be taking in gulps of fresh air when you are running. The aspect of running which makes it a good weight loss exercise is that you can't quit in the same way that you can on a machine or in a swimming pool. You need to complete your run or you won't get home. This means you push yourself more than you would with the other forms of exercise, which increases the number of calories you burn. Besides, when do you ever see a fat jogger?

Atkins diet: average weight loss, 12.1 pounds; with greatest reduction in ratio of total cholesterol to HDL

Mediterranean diet: average weight loss, 10.1 pounds; with most favorable changes in fasting glucose and insulin levels among diabetics

Low fat diet: average weight loss, 7.3 pounds; with smallest reduction in ratio of total cholesterol to HDL

Conclusions: Mediterranean and low-carbohydrate diets may be effective alternatives to low-fat diets. The more favorable effects on lipids (with the low-carbohydrate diet) and on glycemic control (with the Mediterranean diet) suggest that personal preferences and metabolic considerations might inform individualized tailoring of dietary interventions.

Comment: This is the most recent research to vindicate the diet made famous by Dr. Robert Atkins more than 30 years ago. The bottom line is that carbohydrates, meaning refined sugars and flour, are the main dietary culprit behind getting fat and unhealthy. Although the results may seem mild and the conclusions timid, this is another study that confirms what scientists have known about dietary carbohydrates since before the turn of the 20th century.

When you truly consider the weight-loss process, the battle waged is mostly in your mind. Should I eat the corn muffin with butter or would it be better for me to have margarine or better yet, have jelly? What am I doing eating this muffin anyway? Its so caloric and filled with saturated fat. Im such a pig. I have absolutely zero willpower. Its no wonder youll eat that muffin with the butter and slather jelly on top to quiet that negative self-talk.

What you need more than a diet is a way to shift those negative self-defeating thoughts to more adaptive, positive self-statements. As with most things worth doing, this requires a bit of practice. First, become aware when youre using a negative statement, then determine what about that thought is faulty and finally, replace it with a self-defense response or coping thought.
In the corn muffin example, instead of listening to Im such a pig which clearly mislabels who you are, respond with Pigs are animals and I am human. I dont have to be perfect.

Many people cannot change their eating habits until they change their thoughts about food, eating and drinking. By shedding distorted thoughts and replacing them with productive ones, eating habits can be changed. It is possible to rid yourself from many self-critical thoughts, but like any ingrained habit, it takes vigor and vigilance to change. Here are some other thinking distortions to challenge:

Shoulds. Should statements are more about other peoples values, not ones chosen by the person who wants to lose weight. Additionally, should statements reflect an attempt by the dieter to motivate herself without really believing in the value. Better to determine what works for you. I will eat up to two Hershey kisses daily and thoroughly enjoy them.

All-or-Nothing. This kind of reasoning is the foundation for perfectionism. An all-or-nothing individual views the world as black or white. Since there is no allowance for gray areas, the behavior is either perfect or a failure. Ive ruined my diet by eating all that pizza. I cant stay on a diet and Ill just always be fat. Maybe the problem does not arise from the behavior maybe the problem is with the diet that does not allow for pizza. I do not want to give pizza up for the rest of my life, so what I need is a way to include pizza in my diet without feeling like a failure. Let me try having a salad (dressing on the side) before the pizza to take the edge off my hunger.

Good Foods/ Bad Foods. If the truth be told, foods do not misbehave. Foods are not good or bad. While it is true that some foods have more nutrients or are more fiber-dense than others, all foods can be enjoyed. How we think about food colors what we eat and how much we eat. If a food is labeled as bad (such as fries), then for many individuals that food is taboo. When one eventually succumbs to eating the forbidden, French fries, bingeing may result. Rather than continue with dichotomous thinking of good food/bad food, shift to allow space for all foods you like without judgement. Instead of I ate those fries which are so bad for me to I really enjoyed that small portion of fries. They really satisfied me.

Body Distortions. Rather than dwelling on how fat or thin you think your body is, it is extremely helpful to view your body in terms of what it can do for you. For example, when you look in the mirror, instead of zooming in on your stomach which looks five months pregnant, although your last baby was nine years ago tell yourself my body has given life or my body enables me to go where I want to and allows me to have fun.

The conversations that are going on inside your head cannot be stopped. However, what you can do is to be aware of negative self-talk and understand that it has little to do with actual reality. When you believe this, you can respond to the critical voice with a more objective, coping thought. Although negative thoughts may not be stopped entirely, they can be quieted by listening to your compassionate, caring voice. In much the same way you would sympathize and listen to a close friend, listen to yourself. Be your own best friend and chances are youll have greater weight loss success.

Bike Riding for Weight Loss - Tips for Beginning A Bicycling Plan

If you are one of those people who leisurely pedal around the block or over a flat stretch of scenic road, youve probably been riding for sheer pleasure. Riding bikes for pleasure is a good form of aerobic exercise. But unless you map out a plan to push yourself, you probably wont lose much weight.

I really get sick of hearing people say, No pain, no gain! But the old adage is true when it comes to riding bikes to lose weight. By pushing your cycling distance or speed, you are sure to feel some pain in your leg muscles, your hands, wrists, and your derriere-- even some pain in your throat and lungs as your body tries to accommodate your increased demand for oxygen.

GETTING YOUR BICYCLE READY...TO ROLL OFF THE WEIGHT

Your first concern will be outfitting your bicycle. If you need an excuse to purchase a new bike, this is an excellent opportunity! I went from a 3-speed bicycle for leisure riding, to a 24-speed bicycle for more committed exercising. Once I learned how the different gears worked, I was very thankful for the extra speeds. They make my ride faster and the hills a lot easier to handle.

Weve found the guys at the bicycle shop to be very helpful, and concerned for our unique cycling needs. Rather than simply steering us toward the most expensive bicycle available (as I had expected), they asked how much riding we would be doing, whether we were trying for speed or leisure, and whether we would be riding on paved roads or dirt trails. When you honestly share your goals and level of experience, the sales clerks can match you with exactly what you need. They want you to be successful in your biking venture!

Some state laws require bicycle lights. But if you will be riding anytime from dusk to dawn, common sense demands that you have lights on your bicycle. These little accessories are battery-operated and last a long time. There are a variety of lights to choose from. My tail light has different blinking speeds, and is designed to make my bike visible to cars approaching from both the rear and the sides. Check for brightness before you buy one. Install the light where it makes the most sense.

We held off on buying a speedometer and odometer unit for our bikes, but once we got serious about losing weight and getting in shape, this feature became a must have. You simply cannot track your progress without knowing how far and how fast youre riding.

If you already have a bicycle, take it to the bike shop for a safety inspection each season. They should check the gears, tires and brakes to make sure everything is working properly. They can adjust your seat to fit your height and adjust the handlebars to fit your reach, making your ride more comfortable. If youre lucky, they might even clean and polish your bike!

If you want to save money in the long run, you can find books and videos that teach you how to care for your own bicycle. Its always a great idea to know how to change your own flat tire and adjust a loose chain.

Another must have is a bicycle pump. Ask your bike dealer how many pounds of air pressure to put in your bicycle tires. Check the tires each time you get ready to ride! We guessed at the air pressure one summer day, and lived to regret it. We rode the bikes to the swimming pool, not realizing that one tire was too full. While we were cooling off in the water, the hot sun was rapidly expanding the air in the tiresone tire blew as it sat in the parking lot. The day in the sun was not so fun, once the pool closed and we had to wait for a truck to haul us home!

HEALTH TIP: Talk with your doctor first, and get his or her blessing before you increase your rate of physical activity!

STAYING COMFORTABLE ON YOUR BIKE

Sitting for long periods of time on a bicycle seat can cause pain, discomfort, and even serious blood circulation problems in avid bicyclists. At your local bike shop, youll find a variety of bicycle seats made specifically for your comfort and health. The salespeople at our local bike shop encouraged us to try out new seats on our bikes for a few days. My husband found the split seat to be more comfortable for himself, while I opted to keep my old gel seat. Someone has even invented seats that look more like a bird perch than a bicycle seat!

HEALTH TIP: Get off your bicycle seat and walk around every 25 minutes or so to get the blood flow to important unmentionable parts of your body.

Think about your clothing...you dont have to have padded biker shorts and special clothing to start riding bikes. There are actually scientifically engineered fabrics designed to pull sweat away from your body in the summer and to keep you from getting hypothermia in the winter. But for now, just wear layers of comfortable sports clothes.

Make sure your clothes arent so tight that you are miserable trying to pedal. But they shouldnt be loose enough to become entangled in the bicycle chain, either! If you become overheated, strip off a layer. If you get cold, add a layer. Wear light or bright colors to allow drivers to see you easily.

It really helps to have a small cargo rack on the back of your bike. Mine looks like a little shelf over the back tire. It has two bungee cords to keep any cargo securely fastened to the bike. Ive used it to tote a small picnic cooler, a shopping bag or extra clothes.

I had the bike shop attach a water bottle holder to the bike under my seat. I can grab a quick swig as I ride or pour some water over my pulse points to cool off a bit. Take small sips of water when needed during your bike ride, rather than chugging huge gulps.

A helmet is almost a must. Life is filled with hazardsand biking has its share. Be smart. Wear a helmet. You can buy a cool rear-view mirror for your helmet. The mirror helps you see when its safe to turn and lets you observe traffic coming up from behind.

I recommend wearing sunglassesboth for the sun and for bugs! At certain times of the year, the air is thick with flying insects. Getting a tiny bug in your eye is a painful event. For contact wearers, carry a contact case and lens cleaner on bike rides for just that reason. Some day youll be glad you did!

HEALTH TIP: Shake your hands downward frequently to get the blood flowing and to prevent pain or numbness in your arms and hands.

MAPPING OUT A WEIGHT LOSS PLAN

You will want to keep a record of your daily diet and food intake, your weekly body measurements and weight, as well as your bicycling miles and time.

Try to ride 4-6 days per week. When you map out your weight loss plan, your short-term goals will change as you change. Youll quickly develop stamina for longer distance. As fat turns to muscle, your speed will increase. Each week, try to increase either your mileage or your speed.

You know how far youve been able to ride, thus far. Start keeping track of the exact route you are taking, the total mileage, and the length of time it took you. Make notes in your records for special circumstances. Did it get dark outside so you were forced to cut your ride short? Did the road crews dump a layer of gravel on your normally paved road?

What was the weather like? Was it dangerously hot? Was it windy? The wind can be your friend or your enemy. When the wind is behind you, your ride is a breeze...but coming from any other direction, be prepared to huff and puff. Accept any length of time as a job well done and simply get the ride accomplished!

Finally, add an upper body workout three times per week. Bicycling works your legs, but to get the rest of your body firm and trim, youll need to exercise your upper body, as well. A Desire For Change Equals Weight Loss

I love this little gadget. I got it on a whim not expecting much, but WOW, was I surprised at how well it works my stomach. What I do is I get on my knees, grab the handles on the wheel, and then roll it out in front of me as far as I can control it. That's the easy part. The hard part is rolling it back into me.

My goal is simple with these.

Do as many as I can in 5 minutes. Rest as little as possible. It's a quick 5 minutes. You can do this on a hard floor or carpet... it doesn't really matter. 5 minutes a day, that's all I'm asking for from you.

2. Squats and deadlifts with weights at the gym

I hope I'm not making a mistake, but I'm just going to assume you know what both of these exercises are. The reason why I included them as a stomach workout is because the indirect stimulation your abdominal muscles get from these exercises is incredible. Better than direct abs exercises.

You see, the abdominals act as stabilizer muscles. To make these great for weight loss, do lots of volume with these and go at a fast pace.I suggest doing 5 sets of 10-15 repetitions with rest times of 1 minute or less. This will take you about 8 minutes total. Do this 3 times a week alternating between squats and deadlifts.

These stomach workouts arefor weight loss as well as tightening and firming your abdominal muscles so they are flat and fit.

Apple cider vinegar has been recommended for improved health for thousands of years. Sometimes traditional health remedies have some basis in fact, even if the facts aren't understood. I know that as we get older our metabolism slows down so it is very important to stay active, unfortunately I am at a desk most of the day with very little time to go out for an hour walk. After looking at her results so far, I was impressed, although I didn't ask her exactly how much weight she lost, I could tell she had dropped a few pounds and she had not been on the diet for that long.
